Dear Homer:

Indeed I can do all those things, my Loving Friend! And I long to have you near me so that I can prove it to you! Indeed, I have always enjoyed cooking – ever since I was a little girl, in fact; and I look forward to some future opportunity to please you with my favorite recipés.

The poor old lunatic you mentioned reminds me of an old woman right here in Atlanta, who walks about the street mumbling. One day Miss Tilden's Aunt Rachel was overcome with curiosity, and went up close to her so she could hear what in the world she was mumbling about. Can you guess what it was? She was repeating the multiplication table! "Eight times eight is sixty-four; eight times nine is seventy-two … etc."

When Aunt Rachel told us this, Miss Tilden said she supposed that the poor old creature repeated such things because of a need for some version of certainty in her life. I found this a curious explanation, but it is certainly worth thinking about. Heaven knows there is little enough certainty in the world about us, and if Miss Tilden said that if she thought it would help, she herself might resort to chanting something like: "Four times three is twelve; four times four is sixteen … etc."

As for Miss Tilden, she wishes to express her gratitude for the prayers of Lt. Durham and yourself, but the fact is, she continues unwell. And yet, she has bravely and kindly agreed to write this letter, which Lt. Durham is no doubt reading to you. (She did not want to write "bravely and kindly," but I insisted that she do so!)

Once again, I must stop, for she must not drain her energy further.
